Rajasthan Tour with the Pushkar Camel Fair

Join our in-depth Rajasthan tour and attend the Pushkar Camel fair. Travel through exotic, colorful Rajasthan, the land of the maharajas! We shall visit India’s majestic palaces and forts of ancient times. Enjoy magnificent art, crafts and architecture. Experience the golden desert, the towns of Shekawati dubbed “the open-air art gallery of Rajasthan,” picturesque Udaipur by the lake, the pink city of Jaipur, and the exquisite white marble Taj Mahal.

The Pushkar Camel Fair, with all its color and excitement, is a magnificent immersion into the lifestyle of the nomadic tribal herders, farmers and villagers from all over Rajasthan.

We will have opportunities for authentic interaction as the tribesmen decorate, parade and race their camels, hoping for the best price. The fair is also a spiritual time when Hindu pilgrims pay homage at the temple dedicated to Lord Brahma.

On this tour we explore Rajasthan in-depth, visiting magical desert cities like Jodhpur and Jaislemer, two tribal villages and one of the most colorful Indian festivals.

    Day 1-2: Meet in Delhi

    Sightseeing of Old & New Delhi.

    Day 3: Agra

    We embark on the express train to Agra. Visit Agra Fort and sunset at Taj Mahal.

    Day 4-5: Jaipur

    Optional sunrise visit to Taj Mahal. Then we drive to Jaipur with en-route visit Fatephur Sikri. Next day a full day tour including Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds).

    Day 6-7: Pushkar

    We arrive a day prior to the tourism office's announced start of the fair to observe the nomads as they set up their tents, groom and decorate their camels and practice skills. A good deal of cattle trading happens at this time too. The next day is a full day to observe competitions and visit Pushkar town as well. Enjoy a lovely stay at our deluxe camp located near the fair and the nomadic camel herders’ camp, where we can see their lifestyles closeup and interact.

    Day 8-9: Jodhpur

    Tour of the 15th century Mehrangarh Fort perched majestically on a high hill and browse the bazaars of the old city. On the second afternoon,we enjoy a cooking class followed by dinner with the Singh family at their boutique bungalow, Nahar Niwas.

    Day 10-11: Jaiselmer

    Driving into the heart of the Thar Desert, with a stop in the town of Pokaran, renowned for its furniture and interior crafts. The route is dotted by Bishnoi tribal villages. Jaisalmer is straight out of an Arabian Nights fable. We tour the lively 12th century Jaisalmer Fort and visit beautiful havelis surrounding the fort. There will be independent time to explore the winding narrow passages of the walled old city where shops are tucked into every nook and cranny and locals go about daily life.

    Day 12: Manwar

    Manvar is an ideal base to explore Indian desert life, culture, wildlife and landscape of breathtaking beauty. We embark on a village safari by jeep, through desert landscape visiting villages and viewing wildlife as we drive along. Sunset camel ride in the sand dunes.

    Day 13: Rohet

    Visit the Bishnoi settlements in the villages surrounding Rohet. The Bishnoi are a gentle people who follow the 29 (bish-noi) principles of a non violent Vishnaa sect. Founded in the 15th century, their religion dictates protection of all animate beings. Their careful environmental management has resulted in wildlife, including the rare black buck, taking sanctuary near their villages. They are a community of potters, weavers, leather embroiderers and camel herders.

    Day 14: Godwad Leopard Camp

    Godward is located in the foothills of the Aravalis in South Rajasthan and is very rich bio-diversity zone as well as one of the most culturally rich areas of Rajasthan. The people living in this area are the Raikas shepherd community; the Garasiyas, one of the oldest tribes in India; the Bhils, tribal warriors; nomadic ironsmiths Gadoliya Lohars; the porter community Kumhars and the Naths, faith healers. Godwad Leopard Safari Camp is a thriving hub of leopard. Here you can experience the close encounter with this beautiful animal from the cat family.

    Day 15-17: Udaipur

    En-route to Udaipur we visit the magnificent the Ranakpur Jain Temples with 1444 pillars, built in 1439, surrounded by tangled forests. In Udaipur we tour City palace, Crystal gallery, browse the colorful Bapu Bazaar, visit painters of the miniature school of painting and enjoy a sunset cruise on Pichola Lake.

    Day 18: Return to Delhi-Depart

    Enjoy a relaxed morning. Afternoon flight to Delhi. Rooms for wash/change and late night departure.
